Simple Star-1 Guider Instructions
There are only a few simple commands necessary to get started with the
Star-1 Guider.
TIME integration time. To change integration time, highlight (click
on) the digit you wish to change, then click on the up or down
arrow to increase or decrease it.
EXPOSE takes a single exposure of your guide field
TREG N temperature regulation. Leave it on NO to keep the detector as
cool as possible
AUTO autoscale. Use it on your first integration to get a good
background scale, then turn it off. You may need to readjust
it occasionally as the sky background changes.
ROI Region of interest. Set this to 0 (highlight the number and
click on the down arrow until you get 0, click on ROI to start
continuous (up to 32767) integrations at your selected integration
time. To stop continuous readout, hold down or click the center
mouse button. It sometimes takes a while to stop. You can also
choose a subset of the field by clicking the middle mouse button
on the field of view. Click it to the upper left of your desired
area and, while holding the button down, move to the lower
right. This makes a box which will then be displayed instead of
the full field. Your chosen area will be moved to the center of
the picture during your next integration. To get rid of the box,
click the center button again on the field (while not
integrating).
ZOOM the 3rd (right) mouse button. It zooms the field around the
cursor. Keep clicking on it to get back to normal magnification.
The Star-1 Guider should be in fairly good focus when you start to use
the instrument. If it needs to be adjusted, move the Star-1 Guider as
needed for each particular instrument, or call Scientific Support for
assistance.
In case of problems, try clicking the left 2 mouse buttons simultaneously.
If the problem remains, try pressing the white RESET button on top of the
gray Star-1 power supply at the telescope. Occasionally Star-1 will go into
a mode where it will add several successive integrations together and the
display will eventually go white. If this happens and the above remedies
don't work, change AUTO N to AUTO Y and back again. This sometimes helps.
If the scaling seems wrong when you start up ROI, stop it, then set the
integration time to about 80% of what you used when you autoscaled. This
will sometimes help this problem which is not uncommon when looking at
faint fields.
See the owners manual available in each dome (in the fat black notebooks)
for more detailed instructions for the use of Star-1.
