82" Troubleshooting
These tips are meant for general kinds of problems. If the solution(s)
given here fail to help, please call the appropriate person in Observing
Support.
- Problem:
You've gone below the horizon limit. The console is chirping and the telescope
won't move.
- Possible Solution:
Hold down the Horizon Limit Override button on the main telescope console while moving the
telescope back above the limit using the handpaddle. Before you push a
movement button, be certain you will be moving the telescope in the proper
direction (UP from the horizon). Moving the telescope lower than horizontal
can cause the telescope mirror to move in its cell and cause alignment
problems.
- Problem:
You can't find your object!
- Possible Solution:
The correct mount model should have been set for you, but you can check it
when you type 'cosmo' at a command line prompt on miranda, nereid or
prometheus. See the full Point Manual for
more information on setting your mount model. Vhange the mount model at your own risk!
- Problem:
Your image seems to be getting the wrong amount of light.
- Possible Solution:
One possibility is that the dome is partially blocking your object. Another
is that clouds are obscuring your object. You also may not be using the
filter you think you are. Either manually check your instrument or home the
filter wheel (if you are using the Cass Echelle) to be sure.
- Problem:
Telescope tracking seems poor.
- Possible Solution:
Make sure you have input the proper RA (and DEC if necessary) offsets given by the Point command onto
the console and that you have the East/West switch in the proper direction
(a positive offset is West). See here for
more information on Point.
