A quick look at the 30"

At the beginning of the night:

  • Conditions permitting, open the dome. A small platform is located just to the right of the shutter. (See photo.) A pigtail plug may be located on the platform or plugged into the wall (if the shutter is pointed south). Note that the dome may not be rotated while the pigtail is plugged in. It must be plugged in, however, to open the dome. There are 2 levers on the platform marked TOP and BOTTOM. Each of these are marked OPEN and CLOSE. Each has a small slider on top so you can select which way to move the lever.

  • You MUST open the top shutter first. On top of each lever box is a safety slider. Be sure the slider is moved to the left to open the shutter. Please do not change directions suddenly when opening or closing the shutter. Wait for the mechanism to stop before engaging the reverse direction. The motor for the top shutter will stop by itself when fully open, though you will still need to move the lever back to the neutral position. Once the top shutter has opened a foot or so, you can start the bottom shutter opening.   This one will NOT stop by itself. When you hear a change in the motor sound (when the bottom shutter stops moving), switch the lever to the neutral position. Pull the pigtail plug out of the wall and let it ride on the platform.
  • The controller for the tube fans (the gray box on the underside of the telescope) should be left in AUTO mode.

  • Power on the telescope. The main switch is on the right-hand front of the telescope pier next to the DEC dial. The handpaddle is activated now. See photo.
